China’s currency: Yuan love

The yuan has begun 2017 as one of the world’s star performers, gaining 2.5% against the dollar over two days in the first week of the year, before shedding some of its gains. Yet most analysts had expected the currency to come under downward pressure as capital flees China. The signs point to meddling by China’s central bank,  writes our Asia economics editor.
